Comb jellies are somewhat different from true jellies (cnidarians). They do not sting like their cousin Jelly Fish. Do they sting? While the animals are not directly used by humans, they are important for marine food chains. Instead, in order to capture prey, ctenophores possess sticky cells called colloblasts. As mesmerizing as it is to watch jellies gliding gracefully through the water, no one wants a nasty encounter with their stinging tentacles. They lack stinging nematocysts and have developed other strategies to feed and protect themselves.

Each comb row bears a band of tiny, hair-like cilia – the comb-like structures in comb jellies.Both the common name comb jelly and the scientific name ctenophore (Ctenophores swim by operating their cilia like little oars on a galley, sometimes compared to The Wave people do at ball games. They can be trapped under bathing suit fabric, so you may want to remove that extra layer (T-shirt, rashguard, etc) rather than adding it, to create less surface area for trapping the larvae. And some of them put on fantastic light shows.Note that I said “neighbors,” not “cousins.” The difference between jellyfish and comb jellies runs far deeper than the absence of stinging. Sometimes people also develop fever, nausea, or stomach pain. They’re known for generating dramatic rainbows of colors running along their comb rows as they swim, but that’s actually the scattering of colors – light diffusion, in science-speak – as they beat their little cilia to motor along.There are more than 100 known species of ctenophores. Many comb jellies have a single pair of tentacles (often each tentacle is branched, giving the illusion of many tentacles) that they use like fishing lines to catch prey. At night, they can glow with a dazzling greenish-blue bioluminescence that you can enjoy close-up, without worrying about stings.

They are not true jellies, but can be recognized by the fact that their small, transparent bodies are lined with tiny hairs, forming rows that appear like âcombs.â These hairs help them prey on tiny plankton but they donât sting humans, because they lack the stinging cells of true jellies. Unlike cnidarians, with which they share several superficial similarities, they lack stinging cells.
The bladder looks like a blue balloon and enables the man oâ war to drift on currents by floating at the surface of the water. Nearly microscopic, they start as a tingling sensation when they first brush the skin. Each species differs in the extent to which its venom affects humans, and peopleâs sensitivities can vary. Most importantly: They don’t sting. Unlike other jellyfish, comb jellies do not sting people so they are safe to swim with and to handle. They are classified in a separate group than âtrue jelliesâ because they are made up of a colony of polyps that specialize in movement, catching prey, feeding and breeding rather than being a single organism. The very small Ctenophora phylum has ~90 members, all of which are comb jellies. The comb jelly is completely harmless to humans. Their name comes from their gas-filled bladder, which resembles the 18th century Portuguese warship at full sail. Ctenophores, variously known as comb jellies, sea gooseberries, sea walnuts, or Venus's girdles, are voracious predators.
